Area Studies Courses For Study AbroadThe College of Arts and Sciences requires all students preparing to study abroad to complete at least one course in area studies. The area studies course may concentrate either on the specific destination country, or the general world region (Africa, Europe, Latin America, Asia, etc.) with significant coverage of the destination country. The Einaudi Center for International Studies, through its affiliated area studies programs, maintains an updated list of area studies courses offered at Cornell. The Einaudi Center for International Studies maintains a database of International Courses offered each semester at Cornell. An area studies course must be specific to the country or world region you plan to study in. "Comparative," "international," or "global" courses will not normally qualify as area studies courses for study abroad. As Cornell does not offer any courses specific to Australia/New Zealand, students going to those countries must take an area studies course while abroad. The College of Arts and Sciences encourages students to choose a course that reflects academic or personal interests, rather than simply fitting into a "requirements" box. If you are unsure of the applicability of a specific course, or find an applicable course not listed on the database, please e-mail Dean Wasyliw at pw36@cornell.edu for confirmation that your chosen course will fulfill the area studies requirement. |
