Procedures for Applying to Study Abroad
- START EARLY - Preparation in language and area studies most often begin in the freshman year.
- Pick up the informational handout "Study Abroad in the College of Arts and Sciences" at
the Academic Advising Office, 55 Goldwin Smith, or read it here.
- Research your program options at Cornell Abroad, 300 Caldwell Hall; pick up Cornell
Abroad application materials (Cornell Abroad Student Application & "Proposed Course
of Study" form). [Please note: Cornell Abroad requires two recommendations from
faculty members or recent instructors, an official transcript for each program to which
you are applying, plus an unofficial transcript if you are applying to Cornell programs.
In addition, non-Cornell programs also have their own application materials.]
- Attend Arts College and Cornell Abroad informational meetings.
- Discuss your study abroad plans with your faculty advisor.
- Prepare your Statement of Purpose.
- Ask your faculty advisor to critique your Statement of Purpose. Your advisor must approve your Cornell Abroad
Application and Proposed Course of Study by signing both forms.
- Submit the following three items to Dean Patricia Wasyliw, 55 Goldwin Smith Hall, by
the deadlines:
- Cornell Abroad Student Application;
- Statement of Purpose;
- Proposed Course of Study;
Make sure to include any and all materials that require Dean Wasyliw's signature
- If your application is approved, it will be forwarded by us to Cornell Abroad; you and
your faculty advisor will receive your copies of the Proposed Course of Study by campus
mail. If your application is not approved, you may make an appointment to see Dean Wasyliw;
you may be able to revise and re-submit your application.
SOME COMMON REASONS WHY PROPOSALS ARE NOT APPROVED:
- GPA below 3.0 (or below required GPA for specific programs)
- No Area Studies course
- Major still undeclared
- Missing summary of courses required to graduate on time (on Cornell Abroad form)
- Inadequate language preparation
- Proposed institution/program not approved by College of Arts & Sciences
