Transferring Credit

(for Transfer Students)

When transfer students are accepted into the college, Dean James Finlay, the advising dean for transfer students, sends a credit evaluation along with the college's offer of admission. This evaluation shows how many credits the college will accept (usually 15 credits and one semester of residency for each full-time semester with an equivalent of 15 Cornell credits) and which college requirements they satisfy.

Dean Finlay also re-evaluates any advanced placement credits (AP and international exams) awarded by their previous institution and accepts only such credits as conform to Cornell's criteria. The college grants no credit based solely on placement examinations at other institutions.

While transfer students may occasionally matriculate in the College of Arts and Sciences at Cornell with more than 60 transfer and AP credits or more than 4 semesters of residence at their previous institution, they must always complete at least 60 Cornell credits and four semesters on campus here at Cornell.

Once matriculated at Cornell, transfer students may transfer additional credit from other institutions only in the same way and with the same conditions as students who matriculate as freshmen (see under Advising).
