Diversity in Cornell’s College of Arts and Sciences

Diversity

The College of Arts and Sciences is a diverse community composed of students, faculty members, and staff from all 50 states and around the globe. We believe not only in the inclusion of diverse groups in the academic community, but in making the study of diversity an important part of academic inquiry. Students in our college can learn to think critically and analytically about race, ethnicity, and the global world in courses offered by such departments and programs as Latino Studies, Latin American Studies, Africana Studies, American Studies; Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; Asian Studies, and China and Asia-Pacific Studies, among others. They can also learn over 40 languages, including Nepali, Swahili, Turkish, Japanese, Chinese, and Dutch. To explore Arts and Sciences departments and programs, which teach about the many cultures, histories, and peoples in our world, click here. Complementing our course offerings are supplementary programs designed to recognize academic excellence in our students, enhance the undergraduate experience, and prepare students for graduate and professional schools. The Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program aims to encourage underrepresented minorities (for example, Native Americans, Latino/as, and African-Americans) and other U. S. citizens and permanent residents who are committed to eradicating racial disparities to develop their academic interests to the fullest and to pursue doctoral degrees in various fields in the liberal arts and sciences. The Biology Scholars program, which includes biology majors in both the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, fosters excitement about studying science and facilitates the academic and career success of students from economic, gender, ethnic and cultural groups historically underrepresented in the biological sciences. The program is designed to unite underrepresented students who are serious about achieving excellence in biology and the related sciences and who wish to pursue advanced degrees in science and/or medicine.

Finally, our students have access to staff in the College who will advise them, answer their questions, and help them succeed. The deans in the College of Arts and Sciences Office of Advising and Admissions (55 and 172 Goldwin Smith), not only admit students to the College but, in conjunction with their faculty advisors, counsel them on their academic choices. The staff members of Arts and Sciences Career Services inform students about career paths, resume building, internships, and applying for jobs. The College deans and Career Services staff may also refer students to other offices around the University as appropriate.
