Faculty Structure:
Unlike most Universities, the Department of Economics faculty is distinctly different from the Ph.D Program faculty. This gives a two-faculty structure.
- Undergraduate Faculty
- The 30 members of the Department of Economics teach most undergraduate Econ courses and do all major advising. Economists who are members of other departments at Cornell and visiting professors from other universities also teach Econ courses.
- Graduate Faculty
- At Cornell Graduate students are admitted to a "Graduate Field,"
rather than to a "Department." In practice, many departments
and graduate fields are essentially the same- but this is not the case
for Cornell Economics. "The Graduate Field of Economics" is
in charge of the Ph.D. Program in Economics. This faculty is drawn from
the research faculty in five Economics groups at Cornell:
- The Department of Economics from the College of Arts and Sciences
- The Department of Labor Economics in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations
- Managerial, Financial and Marketing economists from the Johnson Graduate School of Management
- The Department of Policy Analysis and Management in the School of Human Ecology
- The Department of Applied Economics and Management in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
- Almost all faculty of the Department of Economics are also faculty of the Ph.D. Program in Economics as well, but the Department of Economics faculty comprise somewhat less than half of the Field of Economics faculty, the rest coming from the other four departments (or groups).
- For the purposes of the Ph.D. Program, departmental distinctions are
not relevant. Students can designate any Field faculty member as his
or her advisor. The Ph.D. degree will be a Ph.D. in Economics, regardless
of the "department" affiliations of ones advisors.Ph.D. Program
Faculty.
