About Cornell Economics Courses
Cornell is quite unusual, both in the number of economists on the faculty and in the breadth of their expertise. The Economics Department is the hub of a campus-wide community of roughly 100 economists, including, in addition to the 30 who belong to the Department, another 70 or so in separate units -- Labor Economics, Applied Economics and Management, Policy Analysis and Management, City and Regional Planning, the Johnson Graduate School of Management, and the School of Hotel Administration.
Members of the Economics Department itself teach several dozen courses, covering:
- The core areas of Micro, Macro and Econometrics
- Analytical methods such as game theory
- All the standard areas of applied economics, such as public finance and industrial organization
- Special topics, such as the economy of modern China and economic problems of Latin America
Economists affiliated with other units at Cornell teach many additional courses, some of which can be counted toward the Economics major. All such courses approved for application toward the major are cross-listed with Economics -- they carry Economics course numbers and appear in the Economics section of the Course Catalog. If a course offered in another department is not cross-listed with and Econ course number, it is not applicable toward the Econ major.
The Department offers both an Honors Program (Econ 499) and Independent
Research (Econ 498) as opportunities
for research for further detail. Note that Econ 498 and 499 do not
count toward the major.
