Department of Economics
The Ph.D. Program

Cornell Facilities

Academic Facilities
Unlike most institutions, the Ph.D. program faculty and the Department of Economics faculty are not identical at Cornell; membership in one doesn’t imply membership in the other. We draw our faculty from five units on campus: "Economics," the Department of Economics in the College of Arts and Sciences [CAS]; "Labor Economics," in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations [ILR]; "Management," in the Johnson Graduate School of Management [JGSM]; "Agricultural and Resource Economics," the Department of Applied Economics and Management [AEM] in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences [CALS]; and "Public Policy," the Department of Policy Analysis and Management [PAM] in the College of Human Ecology [HumEc].

Beyond our Ph.D. Program faculty, there are also faculty members who work with our Ph.D. students in numerous other areas of study. The Cornell system allows students access to virtually all courses, faculty and facilities across disciplines. These other areas include Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Operations Research, a variety of "area studies" (e.g., Asian studies, Latin American studies, Near Eastern studies, African studies), languages and other social sciences.

Cornell also has numerous research programs and centers that are of interest to our students. Some are closely allied with our Ph.D. program, such as the Center for Analytic Economics; the Program in Comparative Economic Development; the Center for Behavioral Economics and Decision Research; Cognitive Studies; the Multi-Disciplinary Research Program on Organizations and Institutions; the Cornell Higher Education Research Institute. Other organizations of interest include the Center for Applied Mathematics; the Center for Quantitative and Mathematical Research in Economics and Management; the Cornell Institute for Social and Economic Research; the Statistics Center; the Center for International Studies; the Population and Development Program; Cornell Food and Nutrition Policy Program; and the various area studies programs, mentioned above.

Other research facilities at Cornell include one of the leading university library collections and some of the best computer resources in the country.

In addition to having resources and facilities, we pride ourselves on making them readily available to our students. We try to maintain one of the lowest graduate student-faculty ratios of any of the top economics Ph.D. programs in the country. There are about 105 registered Ph.D. students and 63 faculty members.

Our graduates pursue careers in a broad range of areas, from faculty positions in top Colleges and Universities to positions in government or in prestigious international organizations. Since 1985 some of our graduates have accepted positions at Brown University, Columbia University, Duke University, New York University, Stanford University, the University of Pennsylvania, Washington University, University of California - Irvine, University of Colorado, Bowdoin College, Middleburyt College, and Wellesley College. Yet others have pursued non-academic jobs with employers such as the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, Urban Institute, NERA, Ernst & Young, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Federal Trade Commission, Federal Communications Commission, and Office of Management and Budget; again many non-academic jobs are also taken in other countries.

Location
Cornell is located in Ithaca, N.Y., at the base of Cayuga Lake in the rural Finger Lakes region of central New York. Its student population consists of around 13,500 undergraduates and 5,500 graduate and professional students, over half of whom are indoctoral programs; together they constitute a major presence in a town with about 30,000 permanent residents. Reputed to be one of the most beautiful major university campuses in the country, Cornell is also close to downhill ski slopes, hiking and cross country ski trails, and water sports. The presence of Cornell and Ithaca College help sustain a full range of cultural activities.
