What we do might be done in solitude and with great desperation, but it tends to produce exactly the opposite. It tends to produce community and in many people hope and joy.Junot Díaz, MFA 1995

The Reading Series

During the academic year, the Creative Writing Program sponsors poetry and fiction readings by guest writers and writers in residence.

Cornell University’s Department of English is home to one of the finest and most vital reading series in the country. Every year, the Creative Writing Program Reading Series features emerging and established writers such as Cornell alumna and Nobel Prize-winner Toni Morrison, former U.S. Poet Laureates Billy Collins and Charles Simic, Irish poet Eavan Boland, and novelist Salman Rushdie. The Reading Series has also hosted our former graduate and undergraduate students such as Pulitzer Prize winner Junot Diaz (MFA ’95), best-selling authors Melissa Bank (MFA ’88), Lorrie Moore (MFA ’82), Stewart O’Nan (MFA ’92), Whiting Award recipient Rattawut Lapcharoensap (BA ’01), and Sana Krasikov (BA ’01), winner of the 2009 Sami Rohr Literature Prize. Sponsored in large part by a gift from two anonymous Cornellians, the Series often complements the Robert Chasen Memorial Poetry Reading, the Anonymous Fiction Reading, the Richard Cleaveland Memorial Reading, the McConkey Reading and the Eamon McEneaney Memorial Reading. All events are free and open to the public.
