EPL colloquia, faculty seminars and campus-wide consulting efforts are designed to encourage the integration of ethical inquiry into a wide array of courses and academic programs across the Cornell campus.
Conversations in Ethics Series
The work of faculty members as scholars and teachers connects them to many communities of moral concern: from the academic disciplines they seek to advance, to the students they hope to enlighten, and the social and political comunities they inhabit and frequently help shape. Ethics and Public Life offers a regular series of "Conversations in Ethics" which allow interested Cornell faculty to reflect on the implications of their connection to various communities of moral concern. Past "Conversations" have covered ethical controversies in cultural anthropology, the use and abuse of academic freedom in teaching ethics, the first amendment and the socialization of children through public education, and the ethical implications of debates about the true origins of western civilization.
Faculty development workshops
Ethics and Public Life has offered a number of faculty development seminars providing intensive study of the theory and practice of ethics, in areas of specific interest to relevant groups of faculty. Past topics have included gender equality, international ethics, and the implications of debates about relativism. These workshops have typically been held during the summer or during Cornell's winter break.
Curricular consultation
EPL regularly assists faculty members and curriculum committees across the Cornell campus in designing courses and degree requirements promoting the inclusion of ethics across the curriculum. We have also provided consultation and advice about integrating ethical inquiry into orientation programs for several of Cornell's undergraduate, graduate, and professional schools.
