Undergraduates
in the Department of German Studies Undergraduates in the Department of German Studies We invite undergraduates to become part of the cultural and intellectual life of the department. In the past we have had a variety of activities including talent shows, poetry and play readings, afternoons of games and music. Your ideas are welcome. Autorenlesungen ~~ Literary Readings In recent years we have had the following distinguished authors as guests on campus: Esther Dischereit, Christoph Keller, Lisa Lewenz, Jeanette Lander, Yoko Tawada. Der Deutsche Kreis ~~ The German Circle The German Circle offers students of all levels and abilities the opportunity to speak German in a fun and relaxing atmosphere. Get together to watch German Films! Das deutsche Haus ~~ The German Language House The German Language House provides a friendly atmosphere and special activities to help students become comfortably fluent in German. Regular contact with faculty members, guests, and other students learning German and the presence of a co-resident native speaker promote idiomatic expression and expansion of vocabulary. Student residents add an important dimension to their Cornell experience by making language learning and multicultural interests a major focus of their social and intellectual life. The residents in the German Language House combine different backgrounds, different majors, different colleges, different interests. During the semester, we meet five times a week for dinner or lunch--once a week with a faculty member--cook and serve a German banquet to the community, take one weekend trip and various local field trips, sponsor games evenings, movie evenings, casual get-togethers, skating parties, wildflower walks and whatever else is of interest to the group. In recent years we have gone to New York City and to Washington D.C.--with visits to museums, the opera, concerts, German restaurants, a meeting at the German Embassy with an embassy official, a visit to the Holocaust museum-- and are thinking of going to Toronto this year.
