Located in 174 Rockefeller, the Writing Workshop provides a small corps of lecturers and senior lecturers whose work supports many important features of the Institute.
Workshop faculty offer their own particular kind of First-Year Writing Seminar, "An Introduction to Writing in the University," a non-discipline-specific seminar for students who might struggle in the environment of other seminars. Each year, the Workshop enrolls about one-hundred and thirty students in Writing 1370 in the fall semester. In the spring, most of those students go on to other writing seminars, while a few are encouraged to take Writing 1380. Students who had considerable difficulty in their fall seminars also enroll in Writing 1380 as their spring writing seminar. Through its Walk-In Service, a staff of undergraduate and graduate tutors trained and supervised by a Workshop instructor, the Workshop provides an almost daily system of support for students throughout the university who wish help with some aspects of their writing or language use. Realizing that an increasing number of students come from backgrounds in which English is the students' second language, the Workshop also has on its staff an instructor with particular expertise in ESL instruction. This instructor consults with First-Year Writing Seminar teachers on developing strategies for teaching writing to second language students. Several Workshop instructors have developed their own specialized, upper-level writing seminars that are taught as part of the English department's "Expository Writing" (English 2880/2890). Other instructors support the Institute's training course, Teaching Writing, serving as discussion leaders and as advisors to graduate students preparing to teach their first writing seminars. Staff
