Applications may be downloaded from the Graduate School's web site (http://apply.gradschool.cornell.edu); it is also possible to fill out the application on line. Applicants who do not have access to the web may request an application packet from the Director of Graduate Studies in the Music Department. The Graduate School Catalog, which provides detailed information about all of the graduate Fields of Study at Cornell, is available on the web (http://www.gradschool.cornell.edu/index.php?p=38) or may be obtained by writing to the Graduate School, Cornell University, Caldwell Hall, Ithaca, NY 14853-2602.

Applicants for admission should follow the standard procedures as established by the Graduate School; the application, along with the statement of purpose and Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) general test scores or TOEFL scores (if applicable) should be submitted directly to the Graduate School by January 15. Additional requirements for applicants in music are listed under the respective degree programs or may be obtained by contacting the Director of Graduate Studies. Three letters of recommendation, transcripts, and the appropriate additional materials (essays, scores, recordings) should be sent to the Graduate Field Assistant in Music by January 15.

Students whose native language is not English are not required to take the GRE, but must provide a TOEFL score or other evidence showing that their English is already good enough to enable them to participate fully in graduate seminars. The minimum TOEFL score ordinarily required by the Cornell Graduate School is 550 (paper-based test) or 213 (computer-based test); the Field of Music prefers scores of 600 (=250) or above. Applicants with fluent English or who have completed a degree program at an English-language institution may apply for a waiver from the Director of Graduate Studies.

At present, all offers of admission include a guarantee of full financial support for three to five years (depending on the program), in the form of a combination of fellowships and teaching assistantships; continuation of support is contingent upon satisfactory progress toward the degree. Full financial support means payment of Cornell's tuition, a stipend to cover living expenses, health insurance, and summer support; in 2004-05 the tuition waiver is $30,000, the fellowship stipend is $16,000, the T.A. stipend $16,000, the summer stipend $3100, and the health insurance credit is $1,202. Ph.D. students are guaranteed support for five years, composition students for four, and performance practice students for three.

Applicants are encouraged to apply for those outside fellowships for which they may be eligible (Mellon Fellowships, Javits Fellowships, FLAS awards, etc.), as these may supplement Cornell awards or offer the student greater flexibility in the number of years of support available.
