1. The B.A., the B.Mus., or the equivalent.

2. Completed application and statement of purpose (send to Graduate School).

3. Graduate Record Examination aptitude tests are required for native speakers of English. Students whose native language is not English must provide a TOEFL score or other evidence showing that their English is already good enough to enable them to participate fully in graduate seminars. The minimum TOEFL score ordinarily preferred by the Field of Music is 600 (paper-based test) or 250 (computer-based test). The GRE music test is not required. (Scores should be sent to the Graduate School.)

4. Transcripts (including evidence of the study of foreign language) and three letters of recommendation (send to Graduate Field Assistant in Music, 101 Lincoln Hall).

5. Scores of two recent compositions, with CD or cassette recordings if possible (send to Graduate Field Assistant in Music, 101 Lincoln Hall).

6. An essay, term paper, or honors paper dealing with music history, theory, or analysis (send to Graduate Field Assistant in Music, 101 Lincoln Hall).

Students who matriculate will be given a diagnostic test at the beginning of their first semester to aid in the planning of their programs. The test includes basic musicianship, sight-singing, score reading with several clefs, and keyboard skills.
