1. Ordinarily, a master's degree in the major instrument or extensive experience as a professional performer. In exceptional cases a recent bachelor's degree in the major instrument may be acceptable. For applicants proposing to specialize in the performance of music before 1900, experience with historical instruments is highly desirable.

2. Completed application and statement of purpose (send to Graduate School).

3. Graduate Record Examination aptitude tests are required for native speakers of English. Students whose native language is not English must provide a TOEFL score or other evidence showing that their English is already good enough to enable them to participate fully in graduate seminars. The minimum TOEFL score ordinarily preferred by the Field of Music is 600 (paper-based test) or 250 (computer-based test). The GRE music test is not required. (Scores should be sent to the Graduate School.)

4. Transcripts for all post-secondary studies (including evidence of the study of foreign language) and three letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a teacher of the major instrument with whom the applicant has recently studied (send to Graduate Field Assistant in Music, 101 Lincoln Hall).

5. A cassette or CD recording, demonstrating the applicant's range of abilities (send to Graduate Field Assistant in Music, 101 Lincoln Hall).

6. A master's essay or term paper, demonstrating ability to write about music (send to Graduate Field Assistant in Music, 101 Lincoln Hall).

7. An audition and interview on campus are required, unless a waiver is obtained from the Director of Graduate Studies. These must have been completed no later than January of the year in which study would commence the following September (contact Graduate Field Assistant in Music by Dec. 1 to schedule an audition date).

Students who matriculate will be given a diagnostic test of basic musicianship, keyboard, and analytical skills to aid in the planning of their program.
