Graduate Record Examination aptitude tests are required for native speakers of English. Students whose native language is not English must provide a TOEFL score or other evidence showing that their English is already good enough to enable them to participate fully in graduate seminars. The minimum TOEFL score ordinarily preferred by the Field of Music is 600 (paper-based test) or 250 (computer-based test). The GRE music test is not required. (Scores should be sent to the Graduate School.) 4. Transcripts (including evidence of the study of foreign language) and three letters of recommendation (send to Graduate Field Assistant in Music, 101 Lincoln Hall). 5. Two essays (term or honors papers), preferably one on a broad topic in musical history or repertory, the other showing detailed study of one or a few pieces of music (send to Graduate Field Assistant in Music, 101 Lincoln Hall). If they wish, applicants may submit a recorded performance on a musical instrument or as a singer. Students who matriculate will be given a diagnostic test of basic musicianship, keyboard, and analytical skills to aid in the planning of their programs. See also Admissions and Financial Aid.
