Martin Hatch's research focuses on the performing arts of Southeast Asia, both past and present. He has published articles on Indonesian music and is currently engaged in research for books on traditional song in Java and principles of tuning, scale, and mode in several different traditions of vocal music. He served as the editor of the journal Asian Music from 1985 to 2004 and is on the board of its parent organization, the Society for Asian Music.

Over the past twenty-five years at Cornell, Professor Hatch has initiated and taught courses in jazz, popular music, musical traditions of Africa and Asia, elementary theory, and ethnomusicology, at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. A performer as well as a scholar, he founded the Cornell Gamelan Ensemble (Indonesian), which he continues to direct, and, more recently, the Cornell Middle Eastern Music Ensemble. He serves on the Executive Committee of the Southeast Asia Program, as faculty coordinator for the Kahin Center for Advanced Research on Southeast Asia, and on the board of the Center for Religion, Ethics, and Social Policy.
