The major carries the study of music to an advanced level through the integration of performance, music theory, and music history. It is designed to accommodate both students who are oriented toward eventual graduate or professional work in music and those who wish to take a more general approach, often in conjunction with a major in another department.

Students contemplating a major in music should arrange for placement examinations and advising in the department as early as possible, usually during the freshman orientation period. Information is available from the director of undergraduate studies.

Advanced placement and credit are awarded only in music theory, and only on the basis of a diagnostic examination administered by the Department of Music; that is, credit cannot be earned on the basis of the AP, IB, or other examinations from outside Cornell, nor on the basis of coursework done elsewhere. Outstanding performance on the departmental diagnostic examination will earn students 3 credits and, if desired, placement directly into Music 152 (Tonal Theory II); in rare instances students may place into Music 251, in which case they will earn 6 credits. (The examination is given on the Sunday before courses begin, at 1:00 p.m. in 124 Lincoln Hall. Students wishing to take the exam need not sign up beforehand--just show up. Please arrive fifteen minutes early; the exam will begin promptly at 1:00 p.m. and dictation will not be replayed for latecomers. Bring two sharp, no. 2 pencils. Be sure you know your Cornell email address, as results will be distributed by email.)

Prerequisites for admission to the major are completion of Music 152 and 154, at the latest by the end of the sophomore year (the freshman year is preferable), with an overall grade of B- or better in each course. In consultation with the director of undergraduate studies, students are expected to have chosen an adviser from among the department faculty before acceptance into the major; admission to the major is decided by the faculty as a whole. Students majoring in music will then design their course of study with their advisor.

Music majors must complete the Core Curriculum plus at least two Electives. The Core Curriculum serves as the basis for focus in specific areas, such as composition, performance, jazz studies, vernacular music, Western art music and Asian music. Students may, however, choose Electives that reflect a more broadly-based study. Those intending to pursue graduate study or professional work in music will be advised to take further courses in addition to the two required Electives.

CORE CURRICULUM:

1. Music Theory: Music 251, 252, 253, 254

2. Music History: Music 207, 208, 300, 400

3. Performance: four semesters of participation in a musical organization or ensemble sponsored by the Department of Music (Music 331 through 346 and 421 through 448).

ELECTIVES (at least two from the following):

1. Music Theory: Music 451-457

2. Music History: All courses above and including Music 374

3. Performance: Music 321, 322, 323, 324
