Figure 1. In the preferential looking paradigm, infants stop the music when they look away from the loudspeaker. The experiment used two versions of Mozart minuets. The appropriately segmented versions contained short pauses at the end of phrases. The inappropriately segmented versions contained short pauses in the middle of phrases. The infants listened to the appropriately segmented versions longer. This result suggests they are sensitive to phrase structure in music.
