Our current policy gives control of copyright for all material published in the Philosophical Review to Cornell University. We believe this is the most effective way to protect both Cornell, as publisher, and our authors from copyright infringement. (This has not always been the Review's policy, and so there are a few pieces published in the Review before 1990 for which copyright is controlled by the author.)

Authors transfer copyright to Cornell University by executing a contract written for this purpose. This enables Cornell to register each individual contribution, and the issue as a whole, with the U.S. Copyright Office of the Library of Congress, which in turn provides for remedies in the event of copyright infringement that would not be available if the work were not so registered.

In transferring the work to Cornell University, the author does not give up all rights. Cornell grants the contributor the right, upon request, to republish the work in revised or unrevised form in a book written or edited by the author provided that, in the judgment of Cornell, the proposed use of the work is not in direct competition with the Philosophical Review. Cornell will grant to parties other than the author permission to republish the work only if the author consents; the author's consent in such cases may, if the author so chooses, be conditional upon the payment of fees directly to the author. (The one exception to this practice is the reprinting of material in course packets for educational use. Cornell always allows such reprinting, without fee and without seeking the author's permission, but notifies the author upon doing so.)

We believe that our policy gives authors the most significant of the rights they would enjoy if they retained copyright, while at the same time providing for efficient control and protection of copyright.
