Maria Nowakowska Stycos,
Senior Lecturer of Hispanic Literature

Maria Nowakowska Stycos earned a B.A. in English, French and Spanish at King's College, at the University of London, and an M.A. in Spanish Literature and Latin American Studies at Cornell University, where she also earned a Ph.D. in Spanish Literature and French Literature. She is the winner of the NEH Competition for Summer Seminar in Theory and Practice in Modern Spanish Poetry, directed by Andrew Debicki. In 2000 she received a grant from the Program for Cultural Cooperation Between Spain's Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports and United States Universities to interview Spanish authors for the multi-media book project, Caleidoscopio co-authored with E. Sánchez-Blake.

A Senior Lecturer, she teaches Modern Spanish and Latin American Literature. Since 1986 she has taught and directed a course in Advanced Composition and Conversation, required for a major in Spanish. Her special interest is in women's writing and poetry. She has worked on Spanish poets of the Second Post-Civil War Generation and translates poetry. Her article, "The Construction of the Poetic Voice in Swir, Castellanos, Rich" (Letras Femeninas) compares poems from the 1970's in English, Spanish and Polish.
