JAMAL J. ELIAS
Ph.D., Yale University

Jamal Elias is professor in the Department of Religion at Amherst College. His specialties include Sufi thought and history, Sufi literature, and art and perception in the Islamic context.

He is the author of The Throne-Carrier of God: The Life and Thought of `Ala' ad-dawla as-Simnani (SUNY 1995), and Islam (Prentice-Hall 2000) and translator of Death before Dying: The Sufi Poems of Sultan Bahu (California 1998).

His A`isha's Pillow: The Poetics of Religious Art is under preparation.
