Shawkat Toorawa is assistant professor of Arabic literature and Islamic studies in the Department of Near Eastern Studies at Cornell University. His specialties include ninth century literary culture, modern Arabic poetry, the Qur'an as literature, and the Indian ocean. His Ibn Abi Tahir Tayfur and Arabic Writerly Culture: a ninth century bookman in Baghdad (RoutledgeCurzon) is forthcoming, as are Arabic Writerly Culture, 500-925 (Gale) which he is co-editing with Michael Cooperson, Law and Education in Islam which he is co-editing with Joe Lowry and Devin Stewart (Gibb Memorial Trust), and the translation of Adonis's A Time between Ashes and Roses (Syracuse). |
