Ellen Gainor

J. Ellen Gainor (M.F.A., Yale School of Drama; Ph.D., Princeton University)

Professor J. Ellen Gainor teaches British and American drama on both the undergraduate and graduate levels and specializes in feminist theatre criticism and women playwrights. She is currently on administrative leave from the department, serving as the Associate Dean of the Graduate School.

Her books include Shaw's Daughters: Dramatic and Narrative Constructions of Gender and Susan Glaspell in Context: American Theater, Culture and Politics, 1915-48. She is also co-author of The Norton Anthology of Drama. She edited the critical volume Imperialism and Theatre and co-edited Performing America: Cultural Nationalism in American Theater and The Complete Plays of Susan Glaspell (forthcoming). Professor Gainor is also a faculty member in the American Studies Program, the Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program, and the graduate field of English.
