The M.A./Ph.D. Program at CornellGraduate students in theatre arts benefit from the unusual flexibility of Cornell's graduate system and the ideals of freedom with responsibility on which the system is based. There are few requirements for numbers of credit hours, required courses, or grades. A student's course of study will be determined in consultation with a special committee, which will take into consideration the student's strengths, weaknesses, and specific areas of interest. Students work with the faculty members of the field of Theatre Arts, which not only includes the graduate faculty of the Department of Theatre, Film & Dance, but also faculty members with expertise in theatre from other departments, such as anthropology, Asian studies, classics, comparative literature, German studies, and English. The theatre arts graduate program leads to an M.A./Ph.D. in Theatre History, Theory and Aesthetics, or Dramatic Literature. (Please note: There is a procedural process presently under way to change the name of the field for the Ph.D. program from Theatre Arts to Theatre Studies, with Performance Studies as a newly added area of concentration.) No terminal master's degree is offered. The Graduate Field of Theatre Arts has 17 faculty members. The number of graduate students in residence fluctuates between 10 and 15. Graduate courses are quite small and there is ample opportunity in and out of classes for exchange among graduate students and faculty.
