What is an RPTA?

  • A professional actor at a regional cultural arts facility

  • A teacher at an Ivy League University

  • A mentor to fledging actors

  • A workshop facilitator

The Residential Professional Teaching Associate Program at Cornell University is unique among university programs. This is an opportunity to act on stage with professional guest actors and work with respected directors as well as to share your professional knowledge with talented Cornell undergraduates.

Who Qualifies To Be A RPTA?

We are looking for actors who have an MFA degree with experience beyond university training. Non-MFA candidates should have considerable professional experience. An RPTA who can perform outside the age range of liberal arts undergraduates is preferred and teaching experience is desirable.

What are the responsibilities of an RPTA?

RPTAs are especially important as teachers within the Department of Theatre, Film & Dance. Each RPTA teaches one class of Introduction to Acting with the Director of Undergraduate Studies working with the instructor on the content and process of this class. RPTAs also play many of the major roles in the Schwartz Center’s season productions and mentor students during the rehearsal and performance processes. Our resident actors also hold workshops for students on subjects such as auditioning, stage combat, improvisation, etc.

Do RPTAs Audition?

RPTAs audition for acceptance into the resident actor program at spring auditions in New York City. Cornell hosts five to six RPTAs each season. At the time of contract signing, RPTAs will be notified of roles in which they have already been cast. RPTAs will audition for roles that have not already been pre-cast. RPTAs may be in as many as four productions in one season or as few as two.

What are the rehearsal hours?

Rehearsals usually run from 7-11 pm, six days a week. The rehearsals for any one show are limited to six weeks.

How Long Is The Residency?

RPTAs are contracted by Cornell for a total of 31 to 32 weeks beginning in mid-August and continuing through the beginning of May.

What About the Salary and Benefits?

Cornell pays a competitive salary on a biweekly basis that includes provisions for health and salary continuance, pension payments, Equity dues payments, and a startup housing allowance. Housing is the responsibility of the actor.

How will I get to Ithaca, New York?

The Department of Theatre, Film & Dance will cover the costs for round trip transportation from place of residence to Ithaca for each of the two semesters, one roundtrip visit during the summer to look for housing, and shipping (up to 400 pounds) of personal belongings. Transportation will also be provided back to the place of residence at the end of the contract period.
